'At the root
of dyslexia is a natural ability, a talent’. These are the words of Ron
Davis, a severe dyslexic, who developed a new system to control and
correct his own dyslexia.
This method is described in the book ‘The Gift of Dyslexia’ by Ronald D
Davis (1994) published by Souvenir Press, available from Amazon.co.uk
and now also from public libraries in the U.K.
Ron Davis believes that dyslexia is a result of an inherent mental gift
or talent. People who develop dyslexia think in pictures, rather than
words. He maintains that ‘the learning disability’ aspect of dyslexia is
only one face of it. He lists a number of famous dyslexics, among them
Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Leonardo da Vinci, Winston Churchill and
many performers and athletes and says that their abilities occur because
of, rather than in spite of, their dyslexia. He states that it is
important for dyslexics to know “that having a problem with reading,
writing, spelling or maths doesn’t mean they are stupid. The same mental
function that produces a genius can also produce those problems.”
The Davis(R) Dyslexia Correction Programme helps the individual to
discover his innate gift, and to apply it to the learning difficulty. In
this way the blockages to effective learning are removed. Clients are
shown how to clear up confusions regarding letters, numbers, words and
language symbols and are aided in the process by the use of clay.
After an initial assessment to establish whether the client would
benefit from a programme, the work is done on a one-to-one basis and is
designed to meet the needs of the individual. The programme lasts
approximately 30 hours and is usually done in the course of a week.
Occasionally a client will benefit from a more spread out approach. |
